The travel and tourism industry has been around for years. However, it only became famous with time. The increasing business and pleasure travel led to its growth.

Meaning of Tourism

Tourism is travel for business or pleasure. People spending time away from home for personal or business reasons is known as tourism. The business of attracting, accommodating, and entertaining tourists is called tourism. It can be domestic, within the country, or international, outside the country. International tourism includes both incoming travelers from other countries and travelers traveling outside India.

Definition of Tourism

Hunziker and Kraft defined it in 1941 as “the sum of the phenomena and relationships arising from the travel and stay of non-residents, insofar as they do not lead to permanent residence and are not connected with any earning activity.”

The Tourism Society of England defined it in 1976 as, “Tourism is the temporary, short-term movement of people to destinations outside the places where they normally live and work and their activities during the stay at each destination. It includes movements for all purposes.”

Increasing Tourists

The craze of traveling is spreading like wildfire everywhere. People want to travel and explore the world at any given chance. Tourists don’t want to leave any stone unturned. Travel and exploration have become a part of people’s lives. Some people have dedicated their lives to travel and have become full-time tourists as well. With the passing years, the industry has seen a surge in both demand and supply.

Covid-19 Impact on Tourism Industry

The Coronavirus outbreak affected the economy of the entire world. Every business from various sectors was on hold. The tourism industry was on a complete break due to the pandemic. Several travel restrictions were imposed since the outbreak in March 2020. All sorts of travel modes were stopped, and everybody was locked in their homes. This affected the tourism industry severely.

The reduced or nil travel for the first six months of the outbreak resulted in several losses in the travel and tourism industry. The Indian Ministry of Tourism drew some basic rules and regulations related to travel. With the reduction in the pandemic, many new travel restrictions have been imposed. The new rules need to be followed for all travel purposes. Tourists have started traveling inside and outside India.

The Industry is trying to get back into shape. Soon we hope to resume travel and tourism in full capacities. The industry is trying to get back on its feet, like or even better than BC (Before Corona). We will soon see people traveling to their favorite tourist places and improving the economy of various countries and cities.
